Protecting Yourself from the Sun

You love the sunshine, but too much of it can be harmful. You can end up with skin cancer, eye issues, and other problems if you get too much sun, so follow some tips to protect yourself this summer. That way, you can enjoy the summer sun without damaging your health or your skin.

Seek Out the Shade

While you can soak up direct sunlight for a bit, you need to seek shade after a while, especially if you are outdoors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. That’s when the sunlight is the most powerful, so it can do the most damage during those hours.

Look for shade trees when you are out and about. Also, get an umbrella for your patio so you can enjoy some shade when you are at home. This will also make your patio feel much cooler, so you will be able to enjoy it for hours at a time.

Apply Sunscreen the Right Way

You know that you need sunscreen when you are out in the sun, but do you know the proper way to apply it? You need to use approximately 1 ounce of sunscreen for your legs, neck, face, arms, and legs. You should also reapply it every two hours, or more often if you are swimming, sweating, or using a towel.

In addition, the sunscreen needs to go on at least 20 minutes before you go outside. This gives the sunscreen time to soak into your skin. Some people recommend putting it on for a full 30 minutes before going outside.

Also, if you wear makeup, put the sunscreen on first, and then put your makeup on. Otherwise, you will not get the full benefits of the sunscreen.

Put on a Hat

You might not like the idea of getting hat head, but it’s better than suffering from a sunburn or a disease. Wear a hat that has a 2-inch brim all around. That way, you will get protection on your head, eyes, forehead, nose, and ears. The back of your neck will also get a little bit of shade. If you are extremely sensitive to the sun, you can go with an even bigger brim for more protection.

Wear Your Shades

Your shades aren’t just for looking cool. They offer vital protection from the UV rays. Sunglasses with UV protection protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes. That will reduce your chances of developing various eye diseases. That’s a good reason to take out those shades. Get wraparound shades for additional protection.

Wear Clothes with Sun Protective Fabric

Clothes made of sun protective fabric give you an extra layer of protection that comes in handy when fighting off the sun’s rays. These clothes come with a special label that lets you know how much protection they offer. Go with something with a lot of protection, especially if you have to spend a lot of time outside.

Cover Up

Summer usually means it’s time to wear less clothes, but that can be dangerous. If it is possible, wear long pants and long sleeves so you can protect yourself from the harsh rays. This is especially necessary if you work outdoors all day. You will be in the sun all day long, so you will need that extra protection.
